An old pair of jeans

I am a fan of a comfortable pair of jeans.  Sometimes I get so attached that I wear them until they have more holes than denim.  Since jeans are so durable even after I put them through years and years of harsh conditions, they can still be upcycled into a new handmade denim bag.  Amazing, isn’t it?

For this cute and comfortable funky handmade purse, I ripped my already ripped jeans into strips and sewed them back together again.  The inside is lined with recycled bright patches of silk tie fabric.

I think this is a great on the go bag.  You can grab it and pour all of your stuff into it.  I know there are some days that I don’t have the time to transfer from one purse to the next.  Those are not my finest moments, but I do find pouring items from one purse to the next is easiest with a purse like this one.

So, enjoy those jeans for as long as you can.  And, don’t be sad when you can’t wear them on your hip any longer.  Send them to me and I will make them so you can wear on your shoulder.

I really admire what you’re doing here. I think more people need to realise that the way in which we view clothes and other commodities is simply not sustainable. Currently, society is fuelled by consumerism; we are constantly bombarded by messages telling us that we need to but more, update more and throw away more. Clearly we need to work hard to change this as it can’t be seen as a viable mentality for the long term. So much of people’s ‘need’ to buy more is just consumerist desire and this should be more widely recognised. I think that projects such as yours really work well to highlight this and will definitely make people sit up and pay attention. Nobody wants to spend more than they need to so anything that helps people save offers immediate appeal! You also show that upcycling needn’t mean downgrading or compromising on style- I think the bag looks great and I’m sure that others will agree!

Hi Ian, Thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate your opinion and really do hope that my work encourages others to find creative ways to reuse everyday material they might otherwise throw away.
